Loyalty & Gamification Glossary

Loyalty, Rewards & Points Glossary

One term per letter, one sentence each. Everything you need to know the vocabulary of a points, loyalty, or gamification system, A to Z.

The Full Glossary

Terms tagged Native to myCred link to live documentation for how that mechanic actually works in the plugin.

A

Achievement

The category a group of related badges belongs to, for example an “Engagement” achievement holding badges for comments, shares, and logins.

B

Badge

A visual reward granted for completing one specific action or milestone, independent of point balance, such as “First Purchase.”

C

Churn

The rate at which customers stop buying from or engaging with a brand, the single metric loyalty programs exist to lower.

D

Dormancy

The state of an account that’s stopped earning or redeeming points, usually the trigger for expiration or a win-back offer.

E

Expiration

A rule that removes points from a balance after a set period of inactivity, protecting a business from unlimited point liability.

F

Frequency

How often a customer purchases or engages within a given period, one third of the classic Recency-Frequency-Monetary loyalty model.

G

Gated Content

Content or downloads that stay hidden until a user reaches a required point balance, rank, or badge.

H

Hook

The automated rule that awards or deducts points when a specific site event happens: a purchase, a comment, a login.

I

Intrinsic Motivation

The drive to act for the satisfaction of the activity itself, the psychological counterweight a good points system should support, not replace.

J

Journey

The full path a customer takes from first sign-up to loyal repeat buyer, the thing a rewards program exists to shorten and reinforce.

K

KPI

A Key Performance Indicator, redemption rate and churn being the two that matter most for judging a loyalty program’s health.

L

Level

A stage a user progresses through as they accumulate points or activity, common on community and course sites.

M

Milestone

The drive to act for the satisfaction of the activity itself, the psychological counterweight a good points system should support, not replace.

N

NPS

Net Promoter Score, the survey metric for how likely customers are to recommend a brand, often tracked alongside program engagement.

O

Onboarding Bonus

A one-time point award given to new members simply for signing up, meant to get them redeeming before they forget the program exists.

P

Point Type

A distinct point currency running on a single site, separate from any other, a core myCred concept most competing plugins don’t support.

Q

Qualifying Purchase

A purchase that counts toward a customer’s tier status or reward eligibility, as opposed to one excluded by program rules.

R

Rank

A title assigned to a user based on their total point balance rather than any single action, for example “Gold Member” at 1,000 points.

S

Streak

A count of consecutive actions, usually daily logins, that resets if broken, one of the strongest habit-forming mechanics in gamification.

T

Transfer

The ability for one user to send points directly to another, used for gifting or peer recognition.

U

User Segment

A group of customers split by behavior or value, such as “high spenders” or “at risk,” used to target different rewards.

V

Value Proposition

The specific benefit a loyalty program promises members in exchange for their continued business, the one sentence that has to be worth joining for.

W

Win-Back Offer

A targeted reward sent to a dormant or churned customer specifically to bring them back before the relationship is lost for good.

X

XP

Experience Points, the gamification term for progress-tracking points that unlock levels rather than being spent on rewards.

Y

Year in Review

An annual recap of a member’s activity and rewards, a re-engagement tactic borrowed from consumer apps like Spotify Wrapped.

Z

Zero-Party Data

Information customers voluntarily share about themselves, birthdays and preferences being common examples, and loyalty sign-ups are one of the most effective ways to collect it.
